Early Rogue sketch.

The Rogue was the first graphic idea I had for Elephant Brand Skateboards and it was brought to life by Tim Clark. The graphic sums up my 25 years of professional skateboarding — eking out a living under the big top, in chains — And where I am now with the launch of Elephant Brand Skateboards — Free.

The Rogue is available on two different shapes. The first shape, the “OG” shape, is the first board that I ever shaped back in 1987 and what would eventually become my first pro-model board from Powell-Peralta in 1988. I arrived at this shape by combining a Neil Blender nose and a Natas Kaupas tail. The “money bumps” just happened… I thought they looked cool — That’s it, nothing more to it. The Elephant Brand version of this shape however is built on a modern mold which makes it far more rideable and familiar to today’s skaters.

The second shape is a straight up rip-off of a modern day Black Label Grosso shape. It’s another one of those shapes that I consider a hybrid — A popsicle-esque board with some shape to it.

I skated both The Rogue OG and The Rogue Street / Pool board in the I Will Not Be Broken video.

On the OG board I had Indy 169′s, Divine 64mm City Slasher wheels with 1/2″ riser pads. On the street / pool shape I rode Indy 149′s, 58mm Spitfire Wheels with 1/8″ riser pads.

The Rogue board video was filmed at Skatelab in Simi Valley, CA which is an amazing skatepark and skateboard museum. It seemed fitting to film the video amongst so much skateboard history as The Rogue represents a real evolutionary moment in my life and career.

Tim Clark is the man behind the Elephant Brand Skateboards logo and the entire first product offering from Elephant Brand Skateboards.

Early inked version of the Elephant Brand Skateboards wordmark. The wordmark is part comic book and part mid-80's Powell-Peralta inspired -- Two things that played a heavy role in my early identity.

Tim was handed the job of graphically creating the brand in early October 2011 with the pressure of having to have a finished line to show in January 2012. We worked closely on my ideas for graphics but it was really Tim’s deeper understanding of my ideas and the inspirations behind them that allowed him to transform my thoughts and feelings into graphics… Giving a visual life to Elephant.

Tim grew up in Southern California and cut his eye-teeth on comic books, skate, surf, tattoos and custom art culture. He actually did some tattoo scratching of his own while in the army but his first truly professional gig was doing t-shirt graphics for action sports brands. He’s done music posters for bands like The Black Keys and The Black Angels. About his work he says, “I just ilke to draw shit.”
